The art of Feng Shui: A blog about interior design and the art of Feng Shui
I’m going to introduce you to the art of Feng Shui, an ancient practice that is gaining popularity in Western society. The goal is to design homes and offices with harmonious spaces that promote a sense of peace and well-being.
The practice of Feng Shui is thousands of years old. In the West, it was popularized in the 1950s by a man named Yuen Kay-Yuen who wrote a book with over 200 pages on how to apply Feng Shui principles to buildings, interiors and even business situations.
The practice relies on two very simple ideas:
Space has energy. Space affects our lives and well-being because it acts like a living organism with its own energy or chi (pronounced chee).
Because we have a connection to space, we can create more energy in it by making it more positive. The energy then flows naturally through the space and into the body.
The goal is to change that energy by manipulating the layout of rooms and furniture so that we bring about order and harmony.
The key concept is that different areas of a space affect our wellbeing differently. If someone feels comfortable in an area, she will feel better – even if she has to stay in another part of the house. That is the guiding principal of Feng Shui.
We can apply Feng Shui to any kind of space – from our homes to our offices and even our gardens. Any place that isn’t working for us anymore can be transformed by a few simple steps.
Every space has a Chi or energy. If a space feels good, people will feel good and it will boost their energy level. If a space does not feel good, people will feel bad and it will slow them down or stress them out.
Here are some tips to get started with feng shui.
- Choose the right colour
Colours that correspond to metal elements like gold and silver are good colours for bedrooms because they promote a sense of stability and security. Colors that correspond with water elements like blue, green, or grey are good in the living room. They bring in feelings of balance and harmony. Fire colours red, orange, and yellow are best used in offices and studies as they promote creativity and motivation.

- Choose your furniture wisely
Furniture should be chosen depending on your energy and also what type of person you are. If you are a courageous, social butterfly, then choose a more loud colour like in red or orange. If you are more conservative and shy, go for a more muted colour like in blue or grey. These colours have complementary energies that work well together.

- Choose your art carefully.
Artwork can help you create the right atmosphere in a room. Art depicting water and earth elements, like the two boys playing chess, are good for the living room. Art portraying mother nature, like a sunflower and birds, are good for the bedroom to calm you down during sleep.

- Choose your ornaments wisely.

Ornaments that have strength or energy can be placed in an office as they bring in energy and power which is needed to work well.
