Some people think that small spaces are limited in what you can do with them. The truth is, a small space doesn’t need to be cramped! In order to decorate a small space in style, these 5 design tips can help. From how to elevate your furniture and how to use lighting, these tips are sure to add personality and sophistication for any size living space.

Designing a small living space is difficult. There’s not enough room for all of the furniture that needs to be included, and it feels like the spaces are cold and impersonal just because of how cramped they are.

For those looking to live in a small space, decorating is a nightmare. A little bit of wall space can go to waste just because it’s too cluttered with remotes and bookshelves. How can you make the most of your limited living area?

With 6 design tips for a small space, this blog will give you some ideas about how to look for small spaces and approach decoration in an efficient manner.

Tip 1: Think of a design concept that is centred around the small space.

One of the most common mistakes that people make is trying to squeeze too much into their small living area. When decorating, it’s a good idea to think of a design concept that is centered around your living and sleeping spaces. When you have a design concept in mind, it’s easier to find furniture and decorations that fits with your color scheme, style and space restrictions. If you’re trying to save money, try looking for items at second-hand stores and garage sales; instead of buying new furniture or decorations from shops or stores.

2: Decorate in a way that maximizes the limited space.

With the first tip in mind, you can start decorating your small space. It’s best to choose decorations and furniture that maximize the limited space, so chose pieces that are multifunctional and have multiple uses. For example, it’s a good idea to get a bed frame with storage underneath instead of an ordinary bed frame; this also gives you more room by not having to get nightstands or bookcases for extra storage. It is also a good idea to get furniture with hidden storage compartments; this will help keep your room clutter free while maximizing your space. This article is going to address those issues with five design tips that will help you furnish your small space comfortably and efficiently. Hopefully by following these guidelines, you’ll be able to make your little home feel cozy, inviting, and intimate.

3. Make use of every inch of space.

When you live in a small space, it’s important that you make good use of the available space. If you have a limited amount of furniture to work with, then don’t let that stop you from creating an incredibly functional and chic room. Use what you have in the best way possible.

For example, if your sofa is taking up too much space on one side of your house, use it as a coffee table on the other side. You can also make a wall unit by building a set of shelves from scraps and other long, thin pieces of wood. You never know what you can do until you try.

Use all of the space that is available to you, and don’t be afraid to get creative with how you utilize your living space.

Speaking of space, the larger items that need to be in your small living room are going to take up a lot more room than they would in a larger environment. If you have a TV that’s too big for the amount of available space, it may be best to purchase a smaller one. You can always get an entertainment center or shelving unit to help you keep your DVD and CD collection off the floor.

The same thing goes for furniture. If you have too much furniture in your small living room, each item will take up more space than it naturally would in a bigger room.

4. Use a Larger Mirror.

While not the most important tip for this space—the price point is more important—larger mirrors can help fill up a room and make it feel larger. Most people, myself included, have been taught that look directly at yourself in the mirror when looking at yourself in a smaller space. If you’re going to be working on your makeup, side-profile mirror is perfect. If you’re going to be working on your hair, overhead mirror looks great (try a subtle overhead lighting for effect). By looking away from yourself in the mirror you will make the room feel larger, and will help you to not look so surrounded!

5. Use Taller Furniture Pieces.

If you have a smaller room space, it can be difficult to see over or under furniture. Higher pieces can help to get around this problem by allowing for more storage and display, making your space feel more like home.

6. Use a Plant.

Plants are great for making any room feel alive and add colour to your space, which can be hard to do when you have a small space. Try using plants that can grow up high so that they feel like they’re filling up the entire room!

Those bonus tips are as follows;

-Design your space to be used efficiently.

  • Minimize storage space by utilizing built in storage.
  • Decorate sparingly. Be sure to give the room breathing room through out the year by rearranging your decor periodically and opting for washable fabrics that can be stowed away during less desired seasons.
  • Create a focal point. Limit the color palette to 2-3 colors and create a hierarchy of colors in the space.
  • Keep things simple, each item should have only one purpose.
  • Use spot lighting to enliven a wall or feature, but don’t over do it as that can produce odd shadows and unflattering results.
  • Store all small items on display and utilize shoe racks for space saving storage.
  • Keep all items organized and clutter free to make access easy and task efficient.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things.
  • Keep a theme running through out the space, this will help create a finished look.
  • Plan your decorating scheme around an item that is key or special to your family, and then build on it. This will help you personalize the space and make you more attached to it.
  • Plan your living space to take full advantage of natural light.
  • Don’t keep too many things in a small space, try to utilize every inch of valuable floor space you can and make the most of it.
  • Offer the convenience of an area to relax, read, entertain and eat.
  • If you are limited on storage spaces leave decorative items out so that guests can enjoy them when dining with family for example.
